Offence sizzles as Cataractes defeat Knights

SHAWINIGAN, Sunday, May 20, 2012 – The 4,672 fans at the Bionest Centre got quite the treat tonight with some fast-paced, skillful and intense physical hockey. Furthermore, the hometown fans went home happy thanks to a 6-2 victory over the London Knights.

The Cataractes were dominant in the first ten minutes of the game, applying plenty of pressure on the Knights’ defensive corps. Regardless of their slow start, London was the first club to get on the board courtesy of right-winger Josh Anderson.

Shawinigan got a golden opportunity with just under six minutes left in the opening frame as two London Knights were penalized for infractions on the same play.

The Cataractes finally managed to get one past goaltender Michael Houser a few seconds after the two minor penalties came to an end. Michael Bournival tipped a shot from the point into the London net.

The Knights enjoyed a two-man advantage of their own but were unable to capitalize.

The clubs retreated to their dressing rooms with the score tied 1-1.

Shawinigan scored in the early stages of the second period. Brandon Gormley registered his second goal of the tournament on a shot from the blue-line at 0:57.

The Cataractes then took a two-goal lead after scoring with a man down. Loik Poudrier made a beautiful cut in the crease and shot the puck top-corner to make it 3-1. The two-goal lead was very short-lived as the Knights pulled to within one 22 seconds later on an Andreas Athanasiou marker.

Pierre-Olivier Morin put the Cataractes back up by two goals. He exploded into the offensive zone and blasted a wrist-shot past the London netminder.

Brandon Gormley was the author of a power-play goal at 9:44 after Max Domi was sent to the penalty box for high-sticking which effectively sealed the deal for the hometown favourites.

Michaël Bournival was named the game’s first star after collecting two points.

Game four of the 2012 MasterCard Memorial Cup goes Monday as the Saint John Sea Dogs battle the Edmonton Oil Kings live on Sportsnet and TVA Sports starting at 7 pm ET.
